DCLD champions drive for more women in aviation
Aviation holds career opportunities for women that involve more than smiling at passengers on an Airbus or pushing a trolley down the aisles. Denel Aviation and DCLD are setting out to show women just how rich the possibilities are in this traditionally male-dominated industry. Eric Khoza, general manager of the Denel Centre for Learning and Development, explains, “When we hold aviation-awareness air shows, girls don’t come and we want them to. They need to know that the industry isn’t just for males but that it’s an exciting industry open to women.” The Denel Centre for Learning and Development offers training opportunities that can qualify learners for jobs including those of aircraft mechanics, aircraft structural workers and aircraft electricians. It is currently looking at ways to showcase career opportunities specifically to women and girl learners. With the 2010 student drive already underway, DCLD is encouraging grade 12 students to visit its website and submit their applications – ensuring that their careers can take to the skies in the future.
